Michael Tolleson is an Autistic Savant Artist, who has no formal art training, but instead relies on the use of the huge amount of stored information that his Asperger’s mind has observed and retained. During his career of only 3 years of painting, he has painted more than 600 paintings, and each painting is usually completed in less than one hour of painting time regardless of size. He states that he feels trance-like during the actual act of painting, and is reluctant to take credit for the finished work as he feels the autism is actually the artist.
In 2013, Michael had 14 pieces of his artwork featured in Dr. Tony Atwood’s Been There, Done That, Try This, an “advice book for living with Asperger’s.” In addition, Michael has had several pieces of art in a European art book titled Sachet Mixte, published in 2012. And Michael’s Facebook pages, established early 2012, now has 8000 followers globally! Amazingly, Michael goes on to share, “I was in Atlanta painting live at an autistic benefit in April 2013 and created two paintings live in 30 minutes”. They were auctioned off and brought in $5700 for the organization to use in services and education that benefit the autism community.” Michael is looking forward to October of this year where he will attend an award ceremony in Edinburgh Scotland in competition for the category of visual arts in the “ANCA Naturally Autistic 2014 Awards”. Michael is in competition against other autistic artists from 22 countries. Next year, April 2015, he will be at the Nokia Center in Los Angeles, painting live while musicians play at a tribute to Temple Grandin and in Geneva as a feature speaker and artist at the "Flying High with Autism" conference.
Michael’s art work will be in 2 books in the coming 18 months:
Michael Coffee Table book (Soul Walking) featuring 150 of his paintings and Writings which will be available 2015 and in 2016 Michael’s angel paintings will be featured in a book and at a 15 east coast art gallery tour with 24 other artists.
Looking at the course of his art career of only three years, Michael shares that he has created paintings that have been all art gallery worthy, has been published, has appeared on the NBC King 5 morning show (New Day Northwest) in Seattle, and has been interviewed for countless newspapers and radio shows. He is currently writing a coffee table book, Soul Walking, which will feature 150 of his paintings and include writings about his autistic journey. He says that he is “an impressionist and an expressionist, depending on what I paint, with my gallery pricing starting at about $2000 for my smaller works (16” x 20”). My art is collected worldwide by investors and those who are just touched by my artwork”.
The Michael Tolleson Savant Art Center, a 3300 square-foot facility that houses art studios, offices, and art mentoring classrooms, is located in Kent, Washington, just 20 minutes south of Seattle. His website is MichaelTollesonArtist.com and he can also be found on Facebook at “The Art of Michael Tolleson.”
